I wonder how much it would cost...
Jan. 6th, 2012 09:24 pm To fund a full-sized, good quality reproduction of the Lemnian Athena.
And I wonder if students at BMC still leave offerings to the well-intentioned but imperfect replacement for the damaged statue we loved.
I suppose the amount required could be put to better uses.

Date: 2012-01-07 06:02 am (UTC)The old sculpture is still there, in the new Art & Arch Library (which, if you haven't seen it, is a really lovely space). But it's in a place inaccessible to offerings, alas.

Date: 2012-01-07 07:42 am (UTC)I'm having a minor fantasy that I could fund a new Athena statue for BMC someday.
Then again, by now that new statue may have become a velveteen rabbit. I find it jarring, because I'm used to the stately original, but the current one was created with devotion and love, and may be so well-loved by the current students that they wouldn't take kindly to meddling. I don't know. And I'm sure there's better uses to which one could put such a sum, if and when I have excess funds at my disposal.

Date: 2012-01-07 08:52 am (UTC)And yeah, Carpenter is the new Art & Arch, in the same space as the old one by Thomas, but larger and airier and so full of light. Sometimes it makes me sad to think that my ancient, gloomy carrel is gone, but then I remember how much I enjoyed studying in the new light and airy science library, and I think overall the change is for the good.
