Mar. 14th, 2006 11:04 pmMy new LJ mood theme is by
girlfromsouth, stills from the classic Last Unicorn film. I probably won't use them very consistently because too many graphics offends my sense of order (a sense which ONLY appears on web pages, bah), but they are restful and have a certain nostalgic charm for me.
The film was a bit wifty in places, but I was young enough to appreciate occasional flights into sappy musical numbers. Also the wiftiness was more than amply offset by the fact that the original writer actually wrote the SCRIPT for his book-to-movie adaptation, so, for a change, the movie felt like a perfectly valid, if vastly simplified, version of the original story. The meta-narrative got dropped for straight narrative: the self-referential commentary about what fairy tales are really all about slipped away, and it became simply a very good fairy tale. The important thing was, Molly Grue stayed Molly, and they didn't try to make her beautiful. Her voice was perfect.
It would be the last unicorn in the world who came to Molly Grue.
I wonder how they're progressing on the remake.
I can't quite imagine Mia Farrow replacing that fabulous voice.
(yes, I edited this entry, poke me.)

Date: 2006-03-15 12:07 pm (UTC)Can't wait for the movie! *loves the last unicorn* I would watch it over and over as a kid... though I've had trouble finding the book. I feel like one of those LotR heathens who haven't read the books hehe. The library doesn't seem to have it though *pout*
I actually named my new bunny Mia after Mia Farrow *g*
