 News here (Guardian, UK)

I remember some humorous and some deeply thought-provoking discussions about blind spots in McCaffrey's writing, but this doesn't seem the place to bring them up.

Flaws notwithstanding, her worlds inspired a great many writers and minds. PernMU* itself was a lively and thriving culture in the pre-web days of the internet which brought a lot of great people together (and the usual psychodrama). For half a century, McCaffrey has been a mainstay of science fiction / fantasy, and lest we forget: groundbreaking women's writer in a genre that didn't much favor such.

My People of Pern book sits on a shelf where I can see it right now. I often used Robin Wood's portraits of Robinton and many another for art practice or character inspiration.

I never read all of McCaffrey's work, but my Mom did; she read each book as it was released. I trace certain angst-influences in my own early writing to Dragonflight. So. Yeah. Thanks, Anne.

Yes. This.

I stopped buying her books about 10 years ago when I realized I had outgrown her, but I will always be grateful for her books introducing me to SF/F and showing me some badass ladies who were the kind I could write about or be, too.
