I'm actually excited that baseball season is starting.

Someday, I need to go to a game. I've only ever listened to it. We have a really excellent announcer who tells tall tales and stories going back to the thirties because he's old as dirt. A genuine bard. But I've never seen the game played in person or even on TV. A lady actually tried to sell me spare tickets to today's game but I have to finish papers before I indulge in any more "fun" stuff.

Only trouble is, I fadardled around so long this morning catching up on ruler stuff that i missed the broadcast for today.

Why do I like baseball?

Okay, yes, there are many reasons why, but it's still a silly game, and I think only Julian and Inle of my flist share my fondness for the sport.

Pro Sports. Bah.

The games in person are definitely fun! Got a pair of tickets for two games from a friend as a wedding present... one was Red Sox and Angels and then also a freeway series of Dodgers and Angels. Hubby's the long time Angels fan (since he was a kid) and I'm the Sox fan (from a while before their big win in the series over the Yanks). Alas, I'm saddened that Johnny Damon has left the Sox for the Yanks!!! *cries*

BTW, do you hate the new name of the Angels as much as most people?

[livejournal.com profile] princeaeneas and you might share a few more extremely unlikely and obscure hobbies, even if your interest lists don't collide except for "camping." Not *only* rare books and ancient histories and mythologies and folk music and wildcrafting, but also baseball (sox in specific.) Your SF and his I think don't intersect that much; you're more anime and he's more surreal alt history. Also, he's a real whiskey snob and I don't believe that's one of your vices; you are more likely to soak yourself in video games and/or pr0n. Nevertheless. I see potential. he writes well, too.

Alis tells me I'm to assuage your embarrassment at being an historian and a Red Sox fan. That being the case, I'm going to ask you a question. How does reading about Duffy's Cliff make you feel?

Oh, and this (http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2005/08/26/fenway_status_may_submit_developers_to_more_scrutiny/).

I feel alarmingly ignorant and do not know Duffy's cliff, but hello, how lovely to make your acquaintance!

As for Fenway, well, it's one bit of history dueling for space with another, like bits of the Roman Forum. It's always so hard to figure out which bit to leave uncovered and preserved. I don't really have strong feelings, but my old girlfriend and her wife have waxed so eloquently about traffic in that part of the city that my one hope is they make things easier for the non-fans to get around the madness.

I'm not actually a Sox fan, I'm a "those LOUSY DODGERS" fan on the Left Coast, but baseball addiction is something I've come to understand very well these last few years.

(And yes, Julian's right, it's Vin Scully. I'm firmly convinced that if I ever actually see a game, I'll think, "that's ALL?!" and lose all the glamor. Vin's voice and dramatic narration lets me imagine all sorts of things!)
