Good grief. Mom and I were out Christmas shopping for Dad, and we found a glorious and terrible thing, Star Trek's illegitimate stepchild.

The animated series, voiced by all the original actors except for Walter Koenig, was directed by Gene Roddenberry, had D.C. Fontana as story editor, and lasted 2 years. The series was hampered by three things: half an hour to tell a story, bad American cel animation, and the fact that American TV execs think cartoon = kids' show.

They're very, very funny. Every now and then, there's one that's quite good. The rest are campy classic Trek bad, or just bad.

David Gerrold still thinks he's God's gift to the universe, and can't script write his way out of a Dixie Cup. His tribble sequel had an audio commentary which Mom and I listened to for about 1 minute before I hit the TV power button. He makes Harlan Ellison seem humble. (Cormac, do you want to be present when I inflict this on Lynn?)

The DVDs all have a generic Star Trek commercial proudly trumpeting that every film and every episode of every Trek show is now on DVD. They show clips of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and that godawful Enterprise. They do not hint at the existence of the animated series. Enterprise is far worse than TAS, but I suppose it at least avoided the error of giant pink tribbles.
