Whoops, this got long, better to drop it in a separate entry. Surprise surprise.

First TV broadcast of the season today, which made me happy, since I had JUST gotten my paper done and allowed myself to watch it. Poor old Dodgertown. They've been there 60 years, it's the old training grounds of the Brooklyn Dodgers, but it's getting to be too much of a hassle trucking the team and personnel out there, so the team's moving spring training to Arizona in 2 years. SO MUCH HISTORY. Jackie Robinson was there. Every street is named after a Dodger (except Vin Scully Way), and it's easy to bump into Sandy Koufax and many other old Brooklyn alums. I can't imagine what it must be like for the folks that live there to lose their spring ritual. It's a bit like when the Romans pulled out of an area and leaving the people to their own devices, except in this case, Vero Beach invited the Dodgers there in the first place.

The Dodgers turned Dodger blue into kelly green for the day. Very startling seeing "Dodgers" on a green background! Even the bases and on-deck circle were green. Apparently the Dodgers have been celebrating St. Patty's day in Vero Beach since the Brooklyn days.

I'm really excited about this year. We're still missing a power bat, but there's so many guys that can put up 15-20 HRs we may be all right. Since we don't, we HAVE to use good pitching, strategy, small ball, steals and speed. Pierre's been bunting and running a lot (and sometimes beating the throw). Today we finally got to see the Furcal-Pierre leadoff combination, and it looked like they'd been doing it for a year. Furcal gets a double, Pierre drives him home. Furcal gets a double and steals third, Pierre drives him home. They're both rabbits.

Friday's game got rained out. Total media circus. [livejournal.com profile] juliansinger, I listened to the radio for the 2 and a half innings. Matsazuki was pitching a lot of droppy pitches (er, what's that called again? Changeup?) and gave up a ton of hits the first inning, but then settled down and struck out the side in order.

Today Vin Scully broadcast the game. Yep, he's still broadcasting after 56(?) years. He covered every single Dodgers world series, both the Brooklyn and LA ones. He covers all the home games all year, plus the west coast ones, and it's all his fault I got into baseball, because he tells such wonderful stories. Baseball bard.

I can't help but smile when I hear his good-natured, "It's time for... Dodger baseball! Good morning, everybody, and a pleasant day to you wherever you may be..."

The Mariners wore green hats for St. Patrick's Day, too. I haven't really been following spring training, but I'm going to a game on my birthday, which is less than a month away!

The Mariners have only been around since (I think) 1977, but they have an announcer, Dave Niehaus, who's been around since the beginning. His signature call for a grand slam is, "Get out the mustard and the rye bread, Grandma, it's grand salami time!" It sounds dumb when I write it out, but it's exciting when he says it. LOL

Actually, after a few minutes of poking around on the Mariners website, I found more information than I ever wanted to know about the whole announcing team: http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/team/broadcasters.jsp?c_id=sea

The Yankees played Philly on St. Paddy's Day. :) and the Phils wore green, too. It looked more like Christmas out there, with the red undershirts and kelly green jerselys. Hee

GOD, I've missed you.:)
And, yes, I'm so glad baseball's here.

I love only a short few miles form Vero.
We will, indeed, miss the Dodgers. :(
It's a sad, sad day.

I love love love Vin Scully. You're lucky you have him full time.

(And yeah, Matsuzaka's... on and off. I'm a little up in the air still on what I think of him. I like that Curt Schilling is learning (some rudiments of) Japanese for him, though.
