Not much news, as usual. Trying to keep up with work, spending some nice time hanging out with people, and the local Miscreants managed to throw a surprise birthday party for me Friday -- THANK YOU!!!!
Took time off today to attend my first Opening Day of the season. It was fun, but oh gosh the parking situation is bad. My knees hurt from hiking too far.
OH, April 15 (of all days!!) is Jackie Robinson Day, and will be celebrated with due pomp and circumstance. Every team will bring his retired number out and let one person wear it, and the Dodgers will ALL be wearing #42 in his honor, since that's his team. Even if you care nothing about sports... you should know about what he did.
I spotted this sign hanging on the freeway on the way to the stadium. The quote is a headline from the New York Times in 1955, the year the Brooklyn Dodgers finally won their first world series after having nearly gotten there for most of a decade, until "Wait until next year!" was their ironic battlecry. Plenty of Brooklyn hats are still worn to games, even though the Dodgers have now been playing in Dodger Stadium longer than they were in Ebbets Field.

Our Lady of Chavez Ravine, with the old "Think Blue" sign on the hills behind left field. Jason Schmidt the pitcher batting. He HIT the first home run of the season in Dodger Stadium. Pitchers aren't supposed to be able to do that!

I got to the stadium exit an hour and a half before gametime, and it took so long to get in that I missed opening ceremonies. New parking system doesn't work at ALL. They kept waving us around and around, and when we got back to where we started, they finally had us park smack dab in the middle of the road! Opening Day is always crazy, though.

Pierre (just left of 2nd base) had just stolen second and was ootching his way towards third. We weren't able to get a new power bat (home run specialist) this year, so the Dodgers are having to play like they did back in Brooklyn, imitating Jackie Robinson: steals, running, steals, steals, and good pitching. Hope it's enough.

Yeah, yeah. It's silly. Top Deck -- cheap seats, good view, and fresh air; why pay $25 when you can pay $7 to be up behind home plate?

Date: 2007-04-10 03:47 pm (UTC)I will never say anything good about the Dodgers again, so enjoy this while it lasts. ;)
By the way, now that I see your picture, I definitely remember you. We had several friends and acquaintences in common. I already knew that was likely the case, but it's nice to have it confirmed!

Date: 2007-04-10 08:53 pm (UTC)It's funny being such adamant supporters of diametrically opposed teams. I suppose baseball isn't a rational thing!
Schmidt had 6Ks, but even with his HR it wasn't enough.

Date: 2007-04-11 01:23 am (UTC)Yeah, sports rivalries are a funny thing. All by an accident of where we happen to be living, I worship the orange and black; you the Dodger blue. If our geographic locations were reversed, so would our sitautions. And yet we cling to them as if they meant something. Weird.
