That's all I have to say. (Well, not really, this being me, but "wow" sums it up.)





Evacuation of Catalina Island on Thursday.

Tremendous kudos to local and state firefighters. The town of Avalon is all old, old, OLD houses (think matchboxes) crammed close together. The 4,000 acre wildfire claimed a few outbuidings, one house, and it's mostly contained now.

I can see Catalina across the channel -- and that ferry, which akycha and I took over to Avalon the last time she visited -- on any clear day when I'm taking my beach walk.

What a terribly beautiful thing.
It's awful, I know, but there is a part of me that things all things from mother nature are beauitful in a way.

I'm afraid I'm the same way. Volcanoes, earthquakes, storms, wildfires -- they are BEAUTIFUL, in a terrifying way. Getting caught on the wrong side of an utterly enormous California wildfire last summer -- fire from horizon to horizon -- I was feeling bad for the evacuees, but I just couldn't help pulling over into a gas station parking lot (the mountains were burning for miles, but it was on the opposite side of the valley) and watching in utter awe.

I'm just sorry they cause so much harm and fear.
