This is for you, Laebeth!
Oct. 31st, 2007 06:06 pmI'll always think of you now when I do this. I hadn't carved a pumpkin in several years when I visited you last year, and sharing it with your family reminded me why I loved this holiday so much as a kid.

When I bought the pumpkin a few hours ago at Trader Joe's, I saw a huge crowd of tiny wee things assembling for the local costume contest, all dressed up. There were still quite a lot of Darth Vaders running around after all these years! I just wish it were still safe and considered normal for trick or treaters... I miss that part.
Just 'cause it's Samhain for me now doesn't mean I'm going to give up the silly stuff. Real holidays can mean something important and still let the kids play!
Happy Samhain, everyone!

Date: 2007-11-01 12:28 pm (UTC)We actually had a very lovely Egyptian queen (a little girl who lives three or four doors down)- she claimed to be Cleopatra, but the costume looked more appropriate for Hatshepsut to me. Still, she was about 5, so Cleopatra's probably the only Egyptian queen she's heard of. Very pretty, really. And lots of female pirates - the Anne Bonney crowd was out in force.
Robbie didn't go around yet, as he's too young to deal with that much candy and can't articulate "trick or treat" yet. But he got to wear his monkey costume (a flying monkey costume for the limited time we were able to get and keep the wings on him) anyway.

Date: 2007-11-01 06:15 pm (UTC)Lots of superheroes, including one girl dressed as Claire Bennett from the show Heroes. A fair number of pirates, zombies, Star Wars, princesses, etc.... Pretty much the usual.
