Well, I'll be. I never realized that the original Mary Sue (unlike Eye of Argon) was written as a parody. It was original only in the sense that it bequeathed the name to the genre it was parodying.

I think it makes it better. It is so clearly meant to demonstrate the phenomonon that existed even if it was unnamed.
